Build Pub/Sub schema configurations with Avro or Protocol Buffer definitions and topic bindings.
Output will appear here...Build a Pub/Sub schema definition in Avro or Protocol Buffers, used to enforce message structure on a topic so a publisher sending malformed data gets rejected at publish time instead of a subscriber discovering the corruption downstream. Once a schema is attached to a topic with encoding set, Pub/Sub validates every published message against it; Avro schemas must be valid JSON matching Avro's schema spec, while Protobuf schemas use standard .proto syntax, and the two aren't interchangeable, a topic's schema type is fixed at creation.
A topic's schema and encoding are effectively fixed once messages are flowing in production, changing schema type (Avro to Protobuf) means creating a new topic and migrating publishers/subscribers, not an in-place swap.
Avro's schema validation here only checks that the definition itself is valid JSON, it doesn't validate that your actual message payloads will conform, test an actual publish against the schema-attached topic before assuming the schema is fully correct.
A schema that's too strict (every field required, no room for evolution) creates painful coordination overhead the first time you need to add an optional field, favor marking genuinely optional fields as such from the start rather than everything required by default.
The tool validates that name and definition are non-empty, and for AVRO specifically that definition parses as valid JSON, before rendering either the raw schema JSON or the equivalent gcloud pubsub schemas create command, Protobuf definitions are checked for presence only since full .proto syntax validation would require a proto compiler the browser doesn't have.
